Fine conditions at Finchampstead as the hosts entertained locals Henley in the HCPL division one 14th match of the current season.

Winning the toss Henley skipper Tom Nugent asked Finches to bat first. The start was not what was expected as Adam Dewes was bowled by Tahir Afridi in the sixth over with 9 on the board. Then steady batting by Greg Smith and Ed Oliver saw the 50 up but at 52 Oliver was LBW to spinner Euan Woods.

Dan Lincoln arriving at the cease saw a good partnership develop with Greg Smith then on 110 Dan was bowled by Tom Nugent for 30 well played runs. At the lunch interval it was 130 – 3 in 33 overs. But soon after Greg Smith’s fine innings if 66 was over as he was bowled by Tom Nugent. At the same score Josh Lincoln was bowled by Euan Woods after some useful boundaries.

At 141 – 5 the innings complex had altered by the two reversals so Finches needed consolidation. But by 173 two more wickets had fallen with 18 overs still available to bat. Ryan Quinn was LBW spinner Euan Brock then Andrew House was bowled by Euan Woods. So 173 – 7. This left Simon Bell and Darren Augustus to ensure the 200 came up but at 208 Darren was LBW to Woods.

Eight overs available as Simon Bell joined by Craig Hodges played useful strokes then Bell was bowled by Tom Nugent for a good 31. The last wicket fell for 243 from the last ball. So a workmanlike score that looked a bit short of ideal but a fighting innings for Finches. There were four wickets for Euan Woods and three for Tom Nugent.

Henley openers Matt Rowe and Jack Davies started steadily but a change of bowling bringing on seamer Craig Hodges saw a reward as at 27 Davies was caught behind off Hodges. This reversal however did not deter Henley as Matt Rowe and Euan Woods were comfortable against all the bowlers putting on 86 in 20 overs. It was a surprise when at 123 Woods was caught at slip of spinner Josh Lincoln for 50.

The free scoring Richard Morris then joined Matt Rowe and the pair put on 40 when Rowe was bowled by young spinner James Woodford for 51. Even with three wickets down just 77 runs were needed in 18 overs available. Then also surprisingly at 180 Richard Morris was caught at extra cover off Woodford for 50. So three batters reached the half century but did not go further.

Although Andy Rishton was LBW with the score at 199 there were no more alarms for the visitors. Fine strokes from Euan Brock and David Barnes saw Henley home at 244 – 5 and 15 balls remaining. A deserved five wicket win for Henley but some good moments for Finches despite needing more runs in the fine conditions in an entertaining derby match.

Three sides played in the TVCL. The Seconds visited league leaders High Wycombe Seconds in division 2B. Batting first they totalled 171 led by Andy Lazenbury 41, Sam Taylor 38 not out and Russell Lane 35. The hosts won at 173 – 6 with another good bowling spell from Asim Hussein 4 – 38.

The Thirds visited Purley-on Thames Firsts in division 3A. They did not bat well in the very hot afternoon being 125 all out only Matt Harper 32 troubling the hosts. Purley at 118 – 4 won the match. Parth Patel led the bowling with 3 – 37.

On the leas Cove Thirds were visitors to the Fourths in division 6B. Finches totalled a high score of 271 – 4 in the fine conditions. Kartik Kanthi led the batters with 96 and contributing were Phil West 68 not out and Gareth Biggs 39. Cove had no answers and were dismissed for 170 so a solid win for Finches. Excellent bowling from Adil Mohammed saw him return 5 – 27.

No match again for the Fifths as opponents Windsor Thirds called off earlier in the week.
