After the chastening defeat at the hands of leaders Aston Rowant last week Finch visited Oxford in the HCPL keen to improve areas of their game.

Winning the toss skipper Dan Lincoln invited Oxford to bat first on a wicket with green tinges so hoping for early movement. Oxford openers started soundly enough against the p-ace of Darren Augustus and Ryan Quinn. But in the sixth over Ollie Tong-Jones hooked Ryan to square leg so the hosts one down.

The wicket boosted Finches to see Ryan Quinn take four more wickets with only 39 on the board. He obtained a clean bowled then two good catches by ‘keeper Simon Bell. Worse followed as two more fell by 61 to leave the hosts innings in shreds. Craig Hodges had replaced Darren Augustus to see him have another catch behind. He then grabbed another caught at slip so with 15 overs gone it was 61 – 6.

No way back for Oxford against the three pacemen. The seventh fell to Darren returning to bowl from the alternative end the batsman mis hooking a short ball to be caught behind. The end soon arrived with Darren claiming all three wickets as the innings whimpered to an end. So all out for 86 and only 21 overs bowled.

The fine pace bowling saw returns of 4 – 30 for Darren Augustus and 4 – 33 for Ryan Quinn. Craig Hodges completed the rout with 2 – 22.

Opening with Greg Smith and Adam Dewes it looked all straightforward for Finches as they soon saw 38 on the board in 12 overs. Then surprisingly Smith was caught in the covers then ten runs later Dewes was LBW missing as he was working the spinner Sam Mendis to leg. Plain sailing thereafter as Tommie Predgen and Dan Lincoln eased Finches home with fluent strokes.

So 87 – 2 and the eight wicket win with consolidation in the table by this comfortable success.

All four TVCL sides saw action. In division 2B the Finch Seconds were keen to reverse the last ball defeat earlier by Royal Ascot Firsts. They batted first totalling 231 – 8 with good contributions by Gary Loveday 80, Matt Jones 57 and Andy Lazenbury 44. Royal Ascot had no answer to the pace of Andy Lazenbury and Ollie Armstrong-Wood as they were all out for 113. Ollie returned 4 – 18 and Andy 4 – 32.

The Thirds in division 3A hosted leaders High Wycombe Thirds. Finches thanks to a last ball single totalled 200 – 9 so maximum batting points. Buit the visitors with good performances by their experienced players were home at 203 – 5 to win a good match with three overs to spare.

No joy at all for the Fourths visiting Reading Thirds in division 6B. They were bundled out for 78 which Reading reached comfortably at 79 – 3.

Another win for the Fifths in division 9A. At Kidmore End Thirds they totalled 194 – 8 in the allotted overs. The innings was bolstered again by Simon Eldridge with 87. In a good finish Kidmore End were all out for 185 so a nine run success. Mike Simmonite with 4 – 29 led the bowlers.
