08-06-2011 - Away - BYCL - West Isley vs Finch

Defeat leaves Eagles bewildered

Sometimes sport produces anomalies and bewildering events; the Eagles’ match away against West Ilsey proved to be exactly that.    Having put their hosts into bat, the Eagles produced a great performance in the field.  West Ilsey were restricted to just 51 runs for the loss of 7 wickets from their twenty overs.  Quality fielding was backed-up by a number of notable bowling figures: Nick West – 4 overs, 1 maiden, 3 runs; Thomas Tinsley – 2 overs, 5 runs, 1 wicket; Sam Jenkins – 3 overs, 5 runs, 1 wicket; Will Edwards – 3 overs, 8 runs, 2 wickets.  However, the pick of the bowlers on the night was Brandon Mahadeo who delivered 4 overs, for 11 runs, and 3 wickets, including a double wicket maiden over.  The Eagles would have been confident of victory; but no one really could have predicted what was to come.

Whether it was over-confidence or the opposition’s grim determination to avoid defeat,  West Ilsey’s total was never seriously challenged.  An early wicket in the second over marked the beginning of a very quick end, as the Eagles were dismissed for a total of 29.  With the surprised celebrations of West Ilsey in stark contrast to the stunned silence from the Eagles it was an unexpected, if not surreal, moment.  The boys would have to pick themselves up very quickly and learn from the experience if they were to continue to be competitive in the division.
