12-09-2010 - Away - Friendly - Hurst vs Finch

Vets leave Hurst on the Fence

The Finch O 40's returned from Hurst with the inaugural Tony Chapman trophy on Sunday.

A start delayed by The Green Man eventually saw the Finches batting on a damp Hurst wicket, and soon in trouble.

Marles (8), Dewes (11) and Potter (0) all back in the hutch before a spirited recovery from Hirani (18) and Jones (24) also both fell stumped - the formers dismissal reminding the visitors that they were in a competition and the latter becoming Umpire Burden's first victim. Blogg (1) was then surprisingly caught by Potter (subbing as the Hurst men changed wicketkeeper) and was quickly followed as Burden gleefully pointed Arnold back to the dressing room LBW (0). 74 - 7 and trouble!

Shep had other ideas (96) and supported by The Butler (29) before the latter was caught at long off and the former completely deceived by pace to be stumped just one more blow short of his century.

197 all out and a fine tea followed. Umpire Burden accompanied by replacement Umpire Reed persuading the players back to the field and leaving Umpire Chapman to the third official duty.

The Hurst reply was rocked by an early strike for Bale with the new ball but soon found its footing as the game became more evenly balanced. Captain Loveday marshalled the Finch attack (if you can call it that) perfectly and wickets fell at irregular intervals. The dismissals of Woodroffe and then Sheldon and Hawkes in one BP over sealing the win. Hurst ending about 40 short and 8 down.

A few drinks in the bar and a short presentation ceremony concluded the event; A return fixture at Finch next year was agreed at the end of a fine day, not a railing in sight.

Our thanks to the Men of Hurst, the officials, players and supporters for an enjoyable end to the season
