03-07-2010 - Away - TVL - Royal Ascot vs Finch

Just one long day

Finch 5th eleven travelled to Royal Ascot and played on the rec at Winkfield. The ground was big, but the pitch was small and straight away you tell this was going to be a hard days cricket, boys v men.

Finchampstead loss the toss and where put in to field and so C Wroot and J Lincoln started the task of bowling out the opposition. At first we did okay, but after a while the heat and the continuous ball just travelling past the white boundary, got to the youngsters.

However we did pull it back with the introduction of father and son Andy and Max Stevenson, who bowled well and later helped by Billy Beswick. A lot of long hops, and full balls didn't help and with the ground flat and hard and a lot of dust on the wicket, Finch just couldn' stop Royal Ascot from going on to score 308 for 8 off 50 overs.

The captain Mike Bale decided to continue his way with letting the youngsters bat and try and get to 309. Openers Wroot and Lincoln, started well with some fine shots and went on to put on 50 before the fall of the first wicket. There on in the wickets fell at timely intervals with one being a son, giving a father out LBW.

Finch continued to fight and with only the Captain and the youngest member of the time batting to save a draw, did you realise Royal Ascot could have won 25 points if it was for the determination of Mike Bale, Max Stevenson and Tony Mcdowell. After our alloted overs finchampstead finished on 161 for 9 and secured 7 vital points.

Hard days cricket, but more lessons for the learning curve of cricket for the youngsters.
