13-06-2009 - Away - TVL - Newbury vs Finch

The Newbury Show

The short boundaried St Batholomew's surface was fluffy but contained the odd hard patch. The coin went up and with trepidation Finch elected to have a bat.

Despite the skipper being skittled attempting to pull one from round his ankles early on there was no need to have feared as first Dan Marles (56) and then Jack McClean (84) took the attack to Newbury's bowlers. A useful 27 from Michael Bale and a fast and powerful 45 not out from Tom Mitchell gave Pots the priveledge of an early declaration at 286 - 8 after 48.

With early calls of "this wicket will turn" from the Prophet (Thomas Bale), the old ball was retained and the honours were given to Potter (Jnr) and McDowell. 5 balls later the bandana wearing Newbury opener was trudging back, ct Potter (Snr) at slip off the bowling of Potter (Jnr) - a father son combination that was remarkably repeated a total of three times during the innings.

McDowell at the other end took only three overs to get off the mark, trapping the astonished Newbury captain caught and bowled.

Wickets fell at very regular intervals and at 33 for 8 after only 17 overs Potter (Snr) was only having to consider how to involve the other bowlers in the squad and starting to note the hinted warming up of his seamers . That call was made for him as first Potter (Jnr) and then McDowell (also Snr!) completed their 5 fers inside 24 overs. Remarkably there was not an LBW or a bowled in the 10 dismissals as the Finches held their chances - to go with the skippers 3 there were also good catches to McClean, Henry Potter and Dan Marles and 2 catches and a stumping behind the sticks as The Butler rolled back the years.

All round an excellent performance leaving Newbury all out 51 to consider the inclusion of a spinner for their next home fixture!
