18-07-2009 - Away - TVL - Falkland vs Finch
The press and players were eagerly awaiting this top of the table encounter. Falkland won the toss electing to bat on a damp pitch and were soon finding scoring difficult as the ball swung and seamed from the opening overs of Chris Wroot (0-12) and Pete Bulteel (1-32). A reminder to the captain of the ECB bowling directives brought the Wroot spell to a premature end and so the spinners were introduced.
Regular wickets fell throughout fell to Dan Marles (1-18), JJ (3-38), Potz (1-46) and Tony Mac (3-43) as Falkland mustered a respectable 225 - 9 in their 52 overs.
The Finch reply started briskly with Potter Snr and Marles Jnr (19) dispatching some wayward deliveries in the first overs. Falkland soon settled into their rhythm however and the brakes were applied as Marles Snr (13), Bulteel (10), Potter Jnr (25), and JJ (1) came and went. The skipper however continued to bat at the other end and the score crept closer with a required rate of 5 per over seeming both acceptable and achievable. Encouraged by the wise words of the Butler (10 not out) and his timely runs, Pots Snr (101 Not Out) saw the game through to a Finch victory and his maiden Finch hundred.
With the points secured the young Finches top the table.
