Champion!

The 5th XI continued its winning ways away to Cove at Hawley CC on Saturday.

The toss won by Captain Bale who, needing 25 points to push Falkland to the wire, unsurprisingly elected to bat.

The early loss of Reed brought Daddee and Dan together; 122 runs later it was the senior who broke the family partnership (run out 42) just 8 short of his maiden Finch 50. Marles Jnr was again the pick of the batters (52) as he was assisted by the school masters in rapid order Pete Bulteel (45) and Jim Dewes (27). The brothers Dewes JJ (23*) and Adam (2*) together at the end as the skipper was afforded an early declaration at 254 - 6 from 45 and Cove were asked to reply after tea to face the old ball.

McDowell (5-17) rolled back the years and needed only 3 balls to start the collapse which was supported at the other end by another excellent spell from JJ Dewes, only to be upstaged by his younger brother Adam who, with Thomas Bale (1 - 1) ,completed the proceedings with 3 wickets without concession to the bat!

25 points secured the Finches returned to the Memorial Park to hear news of Falkland's defeat and realise that they were Champions.

Young Finches; open the champagne (coke or similar), ride on the open top bus and queue for recognition in the honours listings!

Take the applause while you can; League titles at whatever level are rare indeed.
