19-06-2010 - Away - TVL - Teddington Town vs Finch

Finch flop despite classy Canus

A superb all-round performance from veteran Canus Augstus (honourably taking the field to ensure Finch had 11 men) failed to inspire the Finch bowling attack on a two-paced (and faced) Teddington wicket. In the glorious surrounding of Bushey Park, Finch took the batting initiative only to reguarly lose wickets to the military-medium Teddington attack. A succession of classy-looking Finch drives (well, Jubby excepted but he did hit 3 fours) on an non-Finch wicket led to the downfall of most of the top 7 for only 56. However, the next 4 batters then added over 100. The welcome return of James Osler(15) , a circumspect (well, that's what he told us) Kevin Andrews (22), a classy Canus Augustus (39 not out) and a tremendous 16 from a helmetless, sunglassed Kanki, who batted (mostly) with a commendable straight bat. This gave Finch an unexpected 6 batting points for 162 and a (regreattably false) sense of optimism, having seen a ragged fielding display from Teddington.

During tea someone clearly applied the heavy roller. Any reasonable scholar of the game would have expected a line up of TJ Smith (yes - he's back!!), Justin Clarke, Kevin Andrews, James Osler, Dylan Augustus, Jubby and Kanki to even win the game. In the event, all bowled well - fast, straight, swinging it, seaming it (well, perhaps not Kanki). All beat the edge without the magic snicko and Canus was inspirational behind the stumps - all to the avail of 1 wicket. The trick at Teddington is to mostly cut off the back foot, when the devilsih bounce can be best judged. They played their game almost to perfection and knocked off the runs uin under 38 overs. Overall, a somewhat puzzling defeat. Clearly not enough Finch runs but then they could probably have chased down another 60 or so. The highlight was Canus, overtaking Dylans score with a super front-foot drive, putting both erstwhile successful openers firmly in their place and demonstrating exactly how it should be done.
