05-06-2010 - Away - TVL - Odiham & Greywell vs Finch

Finches flop at Odiham

Another somewhat puzzling defeat for the Finch boys, again at the hands of opposition who enjoyed charmed batting lives - an oft-repeated lament. Admittedly, the deteriorating state of the wicket meant advantage to the team batting first - an opportunity taken by a visibly-relieved O&G captain.

Aginast some steady (Kevin A) and brisk (Jubby, a bit erratic, admittedly) bowling the O&G openers enjoyed more edges, mishits and wahoos than seen for many a season. With 87 on the board after only 12 overs it should perhaps have been changed earlier, though. However Simmo and James Coxall put the brakes on, though with less success than they deserved with 1 wicket apiece. James Coxall, the pick of the bowlers, was desperately unlucky to see their eventual top scorer spilled on 15. Cap'n Bob put late pressure on, taking 3 good wickets, and Rosey tried to bounce out their 6&7, with no success but some amusement.

Throughout a much-improved fielding performance (astonishing one-handed stop by Fish in the covers), O&G batsmen continued to regularly find the short, downhill boundary by a variety of mehtods - keeping Finch in the field for the full 52 and closing on a big 257.

Following a reasonable, if unexciting, tea Finch openers Jones and Fisher took the initiative against what was clearly a limited bowling attack. However, the old ball, as is mysteriously often the case during tea, started to swing. With Alex holing out to cover and Fish very unlucky to be given out LBW, panic had not yet set in. However, when star player Rose edged once too often, Scotty O being hit full on the boot for a shouldered LBW and an unlucky Jubby being held by a diving gully ("my first catch in 10 years !") only stalwarts Cap'n Bob and Simmo could put some respectability of sorts to the final score. With Bob left high and dry on 27 not out this was another disappointing and frustrating day for what was suely the strongest IVth team to take the field so far this summer.
