Superb Finch head off Kew

Superb Finch head off Kew

A superb Finch performance played close to maximum potential to overwhelm Kew at a sunny Leas ground. Batting first meant season’s best performances from erstwhile Malcolm “One Ball” Blogg (30) and Alex “Jabulani” Jones (67) and Ben "Fetch That" "Fisher (30), coupled with strong support from Cap’n Bob (34) and the consistent Ian “Rambo Junior” Rose (47) and a terrific 256 for 5 from 51.

A possible season’s best tea followed by an interested and varied opening bowling spell from Matt Jubb and Liam Matthews ensured few runs from the bat but numerous extras. However, Jubby found his range to pick up 3 good wicket with attacking deliveries, Kevin Andrew at first change taking a further two with his straight-trajectory bowling applying pressure to a toiling Kew batting line-up. The Kew captain steadied the ship, taking advantage of the attacking fields and contrasting styles of Simmonite, Blogg and Rose, until surprisingly running himself out to an athletic piece of fielding from Jubby. Liam returned to claim an excellent caught and bolwed and RJ Rose intimidated the tail-enders with half-trackers and aggressive body language to claim 9 and 10 – the latter to a Blogg fly-slip catch that stayed airborne long enough to hear the collective intake of Finches breath.

All in all, a top performance from what was probably the strongest line-up of the season so far – although only changed by one player from the team beaten last week, the benefits of winning the toss, keeping the oppo galloping around in the sun, getting a bit of luck and them hammering them with some genuine pace backed up with some top fielding were clear to see ! A great, if all-too-rare, day all round - will it be back to normal with 4 of this line-up out for the next game ?
