03-07-2010 - Home - TVL - Finch vs Chiswick & Latymer
A fired-up Finch needed only two bowlers to ensure a second successive 25 point haul, this time on a wearing Leas wicket where the Finch batters, notable Matt “Lazarus” Lay with a stylish 61, amassed 250 in 47 overs.“Six-Mad” Simmonite snaffled his best haul for many a season, putting 6 Chiswick cottontails back in the hutch and with Kanki continuing his impressive form from the previous week with another terrific legspin display (and was that an arm ball I espied wrenching an LBW decision from an opposition team player ? Indeed it was !) to dismiss the other 4, Chiswick collapsed to a meagre 56 runs, a 192-run defeat and a 5.30 finish for an early bar !
With Cap’n Bob firmly back in control after the Bagshot shenanigans, the toss won and an opening stand of 84 on the board it became obvious to all (including, I suspect, Chiswick) that Finch would, at the very least, leapfrog the West London boys in the league. After somehow contriving to play-on a legside floater for 46, Capn’ Bob left the stage clear for the hitting talents of Fisher (49), Rose (43) and Hopkin (25) to accompany opener Lay in accelerate the innings past the magical 200 mark in quick time. With the Chiswick captain trying 9 bowlers (one unsure of his own action) and displaying variable fielding on the fast Leas outfield it was only a question of the now-relaxed Cap’n to issue the declaration order from his sun-shaded deckchair.
After the high-class tea where the opposition fell into the clutches of the strawberry & cream scones and chocolate crispies, little knowing the fate yet to befall them. Aggressive field placing (TJ and Simmo 4 yards from the bat is enough to scare anyone) the batting procession began. Efficient catching, enthusiastic fielding and generally accurate bowling from Kanki and Simmo was just too good for the shot-a-ball Chiswick boys. Simmo finished with 6-24 and Kanki 4-32 off 19.5 overs.
A disappointment for the on-bowlers, such luminaries as Augustus, Smith, embryonic bowler Hopkin, the perenially under-used Fisher and not forgetting Cap’n Bob himself it was almost worth asking Chiswick to bat again – not.
This emphatic victory rocketed Finch to 5th in the table and only 10 points off 3rd place. However sterner tests lie ahead, such as unbeaten league-leaders British Airways next week at the Arborfield arena, where all bowlers are likely to contribute !
