08-05-2010 - Away - TVL - British Airways vs Finch

Finch nearly clip BA wings

At a dark and cold BA ground the Finch boys (well, most of them) put on a scintillating batting display, having been inserted following a cold toss, to post a brave and ultimately very competitive 219 for 8 off only 44 overs.

A positive opeing partnership of Ben Fisher and Jerry Knight caned the medium-paced openers for a run-a-ball 44 before Ben was unluckily adjudged LBW (unlucky, as that hardly ever happens with players as umpires - as was proved later).

Capn't Bob carried on the great work , proving that a new bat of whatever make is more likely to score runs than an old plank of whatever pedigree. Possibly getting a bit overconfident, he holed out to mid off, leaving Jerry to carry on with a somewhat out of touch Ramskir (bit dark, couldn't wear the magic glasses, bowler got  lucky, etc. etc) until runout having been sent back on a sharp one for an impressive 52

Exit Ramskir, enter Simmonite, who played himself in via his usual method of clobbering it over the bowlers head. "3 Bats" Simmonite, usually dangerous enough with one, hammered all bowlers around thepark for a typically belligerent 52. Staunch support from Dan Marles, some quickfire runs from Scott Osler, and a rare May appearance from Dave Mason (superb nought not out) and Cap'n Bob surprised the opposition with a sporting declaration.

Average tea (discounting the two Finch players who tucked into sausage, chips and beans), lovely surrounding and out again into the cold and even darker surroundings. Finch openers Mason and Thompson were immediately under pressure from the shot-a-ball BA openers - Mason with an early success, Thompson more keeping everyone alert with a variety of deliveries. The Simmonite experiment failed to break a menacing 2nd wicket partnership and with none of the spinners fancying a twirl into the wind, it was left to Cap'n Bob to show the way. 4 overs and 4 wickets later, all cuaght by Kevin "Buckets" Andrews at mid-off - bearing in mind he dropped the first chance given this was a commendable effort. Suddenly, Finch could apply pressure and with an impressive spell of orthodox off-spin and clever use of arm-balls by Dan Marles supporting his captain the wickets were tumbling. Dan, unlucky not to have 3 LBW's (remember earlier comment ?) very nearly won the game for Finch but with the scores tied and BA 9 wickets down a man called Khan hit out to just get BA over the line.

14 points for Finch - competitive game, played in good spirit, with no bitching, moaning or complaining - other than from Scott, of course !
