13-06-2009 - Home - TVL - Finch vs Theale & Tilehurst
Another tough slog for Cap’n Bobs game but under-strength Finch team highlighted again how depth of quality bowling is needed to win matches, especially on a near-perfect Leas wicket. The intention to get to 200 as quickly as possible started brightly enough, with openers Alex Jones and Bob himself tucking into some less-than-threatening bowling, until a fortunately-held rocket from Cap’n Bob and a feather-edge from Alex saw 2 new batsmen to the crease with barely 50 on the board. The late arrival of the T&T 11th player was also significant as this left-arm medium-pacer could swing the ball late and had some effective variety, containing the run rate. The introduction of a right-arm wirler should have led to some release of the pressure, instead accounted for Ramskir to a truly honest LBW decision and a cameo knock from the rebuilt Simmonite. With Finch labouring it needed some spirited batting from the mid/lower orders, notably Scott Osler (22), Ross Knight (35 not out) and Nick Davey (15 batting at 11), to reach the unexpected heights of 179 and 6 points. Latterly, the T&T bowling was made to look distinctly ordinary, especially by Ross – to the experienced eye this was a potentially ominous sign for the post-tea session.
T&T batted as seems typical of teams nowadays on the Finch wicket – with almost reckless abandon and considerable luck. Some excellent Finch ground-fielding culminated in a fantastic over-the-shoulder steepler from Ross Knight and a comfortable pouch at mid-off by Dan Hegan, however these proved to be isolated successes.
Although James Osler once again bowled well without any luck whatsoever and Nick Davey supported well Finch were still unable to apply the necessary dot-ball pressure to force batting mistakes. Newcomer Kevin Andrew showed some good pace and accuracy, however the T&T batsmen were well set and even their rare edges flew to safety. James Osler did get some reward for his perseverance and control, however the games moved to the inevitable conclusion with some unnecessary arrogance from the not-out T&T top scorer who clearly rated himself far more than even neutral observers could.
Unless the higher teams are prepared to offer better support than shown thus far, this sequence of results will be hard to break for this hard-working but struggling team.
