25-07-2009 - Home - TVL - Finch vs Kew
A seasons-best Finch performance allowed a shell-shocked opposition only 4 points on a Leas belter. Traffic delays meant 8-man Kew opted to bat, a decision they were forced to regret within 3 balls of the start as an ever-improving Fozzie ripped out numbers 1 and 3 with two searing deliveries. With TJ bowling some serious wheels from the scorebox end, Kew were put under extreme pressure for the opening 10 overs, a situation unheard of earlier this season. The Finch fielding also rose to the occasion, especially with Ian Rose launching exocet runout attempts too fast even for umpire Arthur to adjudge.
Fozzie and TJ accounted for the first 5 wickets in all, a terrific display of controlled but aggressive bowling. With some resistance from a middle-order perhaps shuffled to accommodate the latecomers, Andy Stevenson again produced effective swing and seam movement to force errors and allowing Nick Davey to get 2 wickets from probably the worst deliveries he bowled – such is cricket. Fozzie and TJ returned to whistle out the lower orders, finishing with 4 and 2 wickets respectively and a visibly shaken Kew team took an early break all out for only 127.
After another tremendous Finch tea from Sarah O, Finch made short work of this low total. Cap’n Bob departed early, bringing Tom Hopkin to the crease (eventually), confident from last week’s match-winning knock. Bloggy supported ably for a competent 27 before losing his off bail which set the stage for a tremendous display of power-hitting from Rosey (41 in no time)and Tommy (52 in next to no time). This gave Finch victory in a shade under 20 overs, a big 20 points and an early night in the bar – hooray !
With this line-up there is no better team in the division and with Finch less than 50 points off the lead, a league challenge is not inconceivable.
Special mention for TJ, who moves to North Iowa to pursue his American dream after next week’s game. As I will not be playing next week, this was my last game with a young cricketer with great ability and a fantastic attitude (he netted me numerous slip catches in the early days, too).
I sincerely wish him every success in the future.
