05-09-2009 - Home - TVL - Finch vs Henley
Bobby’s boys finally achieved the big 25 points through a tremendous team batting performance coupled with an outstanding individual bowling performance from Dan Marles.
The toss was decisive on a benign Finch Leas track and the calculated risk taken by Captain and Vice to bat first paid off with some great batting performances from most of the top 7 (being bowled for 1 is bad enough but when your Dad is umpiring at the other end – unlucky, Alex !) to reach a season’s best of 250 in 51. Special mention for Tom Hopkin, whose sumptuous driving was appreciated by all (nine 4’s in a total of 39).
After another tremendous Mrs. Osler tea, the boys took the field and the captains decision to start with the old ball and 2 spinners, Dan Marle and Richie Reed, immediately paid dividends with Henley’s young #2 edging his first ball to a grateful first slip. With the captain keeping the game open to help convince the Henley boys that they could win the game, young Marle continued to bowl through 24 overs. Various levels of Henley batsmen came and went, however the biggest 15 year old ever seen by this writer battered the ball to all corners until the boy Marle executed a sharp pick and unlikely run out to see him off.
The Finch boys fielded and caught well, keeping their collective nerve through to the 48th over, which saw the Henley captain first be given not out of the most blatant stumping seen this season, followed by his sacrificial swipe to be bowled, aptly, by the young leg spinner, Richie Reid. Dan ended up with a magnificent 7-87 off 24 overs, the best bowling performance seen this season on the Leas.
So the season ended on a high note for the team – although the league position of 4th bottom (or 7th, for those of an optimistic mien) reflects the inconsistent availability of quality bowling. Hurst 2’s won the league on 300 points, 63 ahead of Finch, however were trounced when Finch were able to turn out 4 good bowlers – man “if only’s” this season but if you want to win the league you need top bowlers and a good catcher at first slip...I thank you !
