On a day of indifferent weather Finchampstead 2nd XI welcomed Hayes CC.
With both sides finding themselves at the wrong end of the table this was a must win game for the Berkshire based team.
The Hayes Captain won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared an excellent pitch. James Robertson opened the bowling from the Church end and immediately made the most of the helpful overhead conditions, causing both openers problems before trapping the Hayes skipper LBW for 0.
With both bowlers in good rhythm and beginning to bowl at a decent tick the break for rain was most frustrating for young Finchampstead side. However the opportunity was taken to refuel the tanks with a cheeky burger from the local village fete.
Following the rain interruption Finchampstead returned to the field to the sound of the great escape, and after a brief cameo from the Hayes number 4 Finches soon had their third wicket of the afternoon caught by Lincoln. This bought the experienced “Skippy” to the crease (friend of Shep) who began to counter attack playing some good shots to try and get his side up towards a decent total. However as the brass band continued to bash out some rousing numbers the wickets continued to fall, with Robertson, Cheetham and Clarke all getting in on the act, ably supported by some good catching from Jewes and Archer (second name not worth attempting).
Finchampstead were in control with Hayes at 107-9 however a belligerent last wicket partnership ensured the Hayes side got to 163, before Cheetham claimed the last wicket of the innings. An excellent bowling display was lead by James Robertson, whose consistent ability to trouble opposition batsmen is key to the Finchampstead team.
After a well balanced tea, Shepherd and Adkins opened the Finchampstead reply with a watchful opening stand of 33 before Shepherd was unlucky to fall LBW for a valuable 23. Lincoln joined Adkins at the crease and the pair went about continuing to accumulate runs at a steady pace before Adkins pushed one wide of extra cover and called for a run, the fielder picked the ball up cleanly and hit the stumps running the Finch opener out for a well made 23. Dan Marles then strode to the wicket immediately looked in good touch, hitting the ball well through the off – side combined with Lincoln looking more and more comfortable Finchampstead seemed to be cruising. However a good ball from the Hayes skipper nipped back trapping Marles LBW for an aesthetic 23.
After the previous week’s effort there was a few nervous faces as Finches lost their third wicket however Lincoln (55no) and Cheetham (41 no) put a good partnership together with some positive shots all around the ground, including a 6 over extra cover to the short boundary by Cheetham, which he attributed to his off-season gym program… Lincoln finished the game off emphatically with a pull shot over mid wicket to ensure Finches first win of the season.
Overall a very good win for the Finchampstead team with some strong contributions from Lincoln, Cheetham and Robertson. However if Shep’s army are to continue their march to safety this must be followed up with a good result away to North Maidenhead next week.
