30-05-2009 - Away - HCPL - Reading vs Finch

Welsh Fight in Reading

After two defeats a more determined performance was needed as Finchampstead visited Reading on Saturday.  Reading winning the toss batted first.  They were very soon in trouble as opener Neil Saker was run out by a direst throw from Steve Bloyce without scoring and then two lbw’s from seamer Simon Hards saw Reading33 for 3 in the 13th over.

They were indebted to a fine stand of 143 from Danny Housego and skipper David Barr who turned the game towards the hosts, when Barr was dismissed for 34, the runs continued with the closure at 256 for 4.  Housego ended on a magnificent 152 not out in the 57 overs allocation.

Given 53 overs Finches started badly with three down for 13.  Openers Simon Bell and Mark Shepherd soon perished and Perviez Aziz clipped a rearing ball to gully.  Then left handers Matt Jones and Russell Lane batted well as 91 runs were added.  Lane was lbw, David Hartley offering no stroke and at 111 the fine innings of Welshman Matt Jones ended when he was well caught in the deep for 62.  With Finches in some trouble they were indebted to a determined stand between Darren Augustus 34 not out and another semi-Welshman Sam Taylor 33.  Finches lost two wickets in the penultimate over but ended at 176 for 7 for the drawn match.
