16-05-2009 - Away - HCPL - Falkland vs Finch

Finches fall short

A visit to Berkshire rivals Falkland on Saturday for the second match of the season with Finchampstead hoping to progress on the successful start the previous week.

Winning the toss, Falkland asked Finches to bat first.  They started the innings in style with Russell Lane and Simon Bell hitting 60 off the first 8 overs.  Then both openers perished but only one more wicket fell as 95 runs were added.  Then at 1.55 Mark Shepherd was bowled by spinner George Trewby who 4 runs later held a hard drive from Perviez Aziz to end his fine innings of 58.  Finches then unaccountably collapsed as they failed to settle against the spinners and with the last 5 wickets falling for just 23, the all out total was 182.  Trewby secured 5 for 24 and the pace of Neil Gunter 3 for 53.

Early success for Finches as, although Will Chaloner hammered 16 off the first over, he and Steve Pope were immediately out.  Worse followed with 5 down at 30, four of these to Anthony Parson.  Seven wickets were down at 94 but sound batting from Mark Foster saw 39 valuable runs scored before the eighth wicket fell at 133.  Finches pegged away but failed to take wickets leaving Falkland to gather momentum in the last few overs.  They won in a thrilling finish with just one ball remaining.  Foster was an outstanding 76 not out in the narrow but merited win.  Anthony Parson took 5 for 38 and fellow seamer Steve Bloyce secured two wickets.
