09-05-2009 - Home - HCPL - Finch vs Burnham

Aziz 'ton bomb' dropped on Burnham !

Finchampstead opened their campaign in the Home Counties Premier league hosting Burnham.  Burnham were asked to bat first in the usual good looking conditions at the host club.

Opening with seamers Simon Hards and Steve Bloyce, there was soon success with opener Mustaba Ahmed caught behind off Bloyce.  A 56 run stand was ended again by Bloyce removing Fazal.  At lunch, Burnham were 110 for 4 wickets in 32 overs with spinner Sam Cheetham joining the attack and removing two batsmen.  Good strokes in the afternoon from skipper Shaid Nadeem saw the score to 190 before he was seventh out for 87.  The spin of Perviez Aziz then saw the innings close at 218 in 59 overs.  There were three wickets apiece for Steve Bloyce, Perviez Aziz and Sam Cheetham.  Good fielding including seven catches ensured a total affording Finches the opportunity to secure the runs.

Given 51 overs, Finchampstead started steadily but with 42 on the board both openers Russell Lane and Simon Bell were back in the pavilion.  This brought Matt Jones and Perviez Aziz to the wicket who then embarked on a fine partnership.  They played sensibly against the unchanged spin of the experienced Zulfi Butt.  The superb partnership produced 173 runs and at 215 Aziz reached his fine century.  But with 4 runs needed he was dismissed by Butt.  The win arrived at 219-3 and 2 overs to spare with Matt Jones ending on 61 not out.  A fine first success by 7 wickets with good team spirit and performance.
