09-07-2011 - Away - TVL - Kew vs Finch
It was a visit to Kew for the first match of the second half of the Thames Valley League programme for Finchampstead.
Despite good covering following the uncertain weather preceding the match the pitch looked greenish with some movement likely. Kew on winning the toss then asked Finches to bat first.
The start needed did not materialise as Finches were reduced to 18 – 3 in 7 overs. Openers Russell Lane and Gary Loveday departed lbw and bowled off stump. Then Geoff Isaacs was also lbw giving two of the wickets to seamer Mike Dunn.
Some good batting from skipper Matt Jones saw the 50 up until the introduction of spinner Ali Baig saw Simon Bell stumped. Accurate spinner Baig had Tom Ansell lbw leaving Finches at 71 – 5. The fine strokes continued from Jones until at 120 he was lbw to Baig for his well struck 85.
Useful knocks from Kwame Appiah and Sam Taylor saw the 150 up before the final wickets fell to leave Finches all out for 161. There were seven wickets for the spinners Baig with 5 – 35 and two for Bajaj.
Given 53 overs Kew started steadily against the seam of Sam Taylor and the spin of JJ Dewes. But at 26 JJ had secured the wickets of opener Ian Maynard caught at mid off and Andy Yaxley lbw. At 39 he had Bruce Fridericks stumped by Simon Bell. With no addition to the score his fourth wicket saw Rob Maier caught without scoring. At 83 his fifth wicket in only his second senior match arrived as Doug Lowe was a second stumping for Bell after a good 26 scored.
Once more with no addition to the score Mike Dunn was lbw Taylor and he then bowled Ed Knowles to leave Kew in real trouble at 94 – 7. Without bowling changes until the final overs Kew skipper Nathan Pearce hammered big shots around the ground. Kew then having put on 71 in an unbroken partnership between Pearce and Ali Baig were home for the three wicket win. Pearce was 52 not out at the end.
The fine bowling by JJ Dewes saw a return of 5 – 85 but a loss still leaving Finches in fourth slot in the table.
