07-05-2011 - Home - TVL - Finch vs Kew
Finchampstead opened their first Thames Valley League campaign for eleven seasons by hosting Kew on Saturday in the division one match.
Kew were invited to take first strike opening against seamers Simon Hards and Sam Taylor. Success was immediate for Finches as Hards trapped Ed Knowles lbw in the first over. After he bowled Bruce Fridericks Kew had both openers back in the pavilion with just 20 runs on the board. After Tom Ansell held a fine catch in the deep off Taylor Kew were 33 – 3.
Soon spinner Matt Harper and seamer Gary Loveday joined the attack in tandem and their controlled bowling ensured a limited total likely for the visitors. Loveday removed both Rob Maier and Nathan Pearce to see Kew at 80 – 5. Then with Mike Dunn run out the innings was in real trouble. Good strokes in the later order from Andy Yaxley with 32 saw some respectability as Kew closed at 151 all out in 50 overs.
Loveday with 3 – 36 and Harper 3 – 46 led the bowlers with Hards taking the important openers with 2 – 20.
Openers Russell Lane and Gary Loveday soon produced an array of strokes against the Kew opening attack of Mike Dunn and Nathan Pearce. After ten overs 80 runs were on the board and bowling changes inevitable. When Rob Maier joined the attack he had Loveday lbw for 29. But the run flow continued for Lane and skipper Matt Jones. With the scores level Jones was bowled by Rohit Bajaj for 33 but the eight wicket win at 152 – 2 was assured. It arrived in 24 overs with Lane a fine 75 not out.
This was a merited win for Finches and a good start to the league season.
