Boys bouncing back

After the poor showing with the nine wicket defeat by Basingstoke last week Finchampstead needed positive cricket in their visit to High Wycombe seconds on Saturday.
Losing the toss Finches batted first in cloudy starting conditions yet on a good surface. With 19 on the board both openers were back in the pavilion. Gary Loveday was lbw and Russell Lane out of a skied drive. But a good attacking partnership between skipper Matt Jones and Geoff Isaacs saw 94 put on before Jones was out for 40 then 4 runs later Isaacs was bowled for a well played 48.
Then the middle order faced problems as 3 more wickets soon fell leaving Finches at 135 – 7 in 42 overs. Sam Cheetham joined Sam Taylor and the pair batted well to put on 66 and the 200 up. Cheetham perished lbw for 34 and Taylor caught in the deep for his fine 53. Final strokes from Tom Potter and Simon Hards saw the score to 246 – 9 in 52 overs.
Opening the bowling with Simon Hards and Sam Taylor immediate success as Hards trapped opener John Stevens lbw first ball and at 9 he bowled Russell Thomson. At 62 4 wickets were down both to Taylor with Mike Lance well caught by Kwame Appiah. Two more were down at 77 – 6 leaving three apiece for Hards and Taylor. Their long spells having ended Russell Lane secured the seventh then another fine catch by Appiah saw the eighth wicket to fall this off Tom Potter. There were 112 on the board and 18 overs remaining.
But fine strokes from George Russell and Rob Collins thwarted Finches as the pair put on 64 in 13 overs. Eventually both were dismissed by leg spinner Sam Cheetham leaving the hosts all out for 183.
A good and deserved win by 63 runs and 25 useful points.
