28-05-2011 - Away - TVL - Henley vs Finch
For the fourth match in division one Finchampstead visited Henley. In the cloudy and occasionally gusty wind Henley having won the toss inserted Finches.
Openers Gary Loveday and Russell Lane faced the seam of James Munroe and Sam Wheeler. The early movement created some discomfort for the batsmen. At 15 both were dismissed with catches behind and in the covers. Matt Jones and Geoff Isaacs then batted soundly to see the 50 up in 14 overs. But at 64 Isaacs was caught in the covers for 23 and 10 runs later Jones was caught behind for 25. When Dan Lincoln was also a covers catch victim Finches were in trouble at 84 – 5.
Then a well worked stand of 63 between Tom Ansell and Simon Bell saw the score to 147 before Ansell was also caught this at mid on for his 28. Soon two more wickets fell with Sam Taylor and Matt Harper departing cheaply. The fine innings of Bell continued but two more catches meant the innings closure so Finches were all out for 187. Simon Bell was not out for 64.
Henley were given 53 overs to gather the runs. They opened with Chris Ellison and Jason Barber against Simon Hards and Sam Taylor. After Gary Loveday replaced Hards he clean bowled both Barber then Simon Horne. This was at 72 with Ellison dominating the innings already having reached his half century.
The hard working Taylor dismissed Nigel Goodson in his twelfth over then at 110 he had Ellison caught behind for a well worked 68. Spinners Matt Harper and Tom Potter had joined the attack. But Henley progressed to 165 – 4 thus requiring 23 to win. Then with Russell Lane replacing Harper a dramatic change in the game arrived. Immediately he removed the White brothers Darren for 46 and Andy for 25. Continuing his accurate pace two more fell then he bowled Tom Nugent with the second ball of the last over. Henley were 184 – 9 and then with the last ball to be bowled any of four results were possible.
The last ball being a leg bye Henley closed on 186 – 9 in the closest of finishes and a drawn match. The remarkable spell of four overs by Lane saw him return 5 – 5. A fine encounter bringing 13 points to Finches.
