Finches chase falls short

League leaders Cove were the visitors to Finchampstead on Saturday.
The visitors decided to bat first in fine conditions at the park. Openers Simon Reed and Nick Randall batted steadily against the seam of Simon Hards and Sam Taylor. It was not until the bowlers were replaced by Tom Potter and Gary Loveday that an inroad was made. Then at 77 Randall was lbw Loveday for 36.
Cove were relishing the conditions as N eil Randall aggressively attacked the bowling. He soon reached 50 and with Reed put on 105 before Potter bowled Reed for 55. Then prolific batsman Chris Benham jouned Randall to see another big stand. It ended at 252 when Randall was caught in the deep by Matt Jones off spinner JJ Dewes for his fine 106.
Benham continued to punish the attack and at 48 overs Cove declared at 306 – 4 with Benham 77 not out. There were two wickets for Dewes in his first senior match.
Given 52 overs Finches opened with Gary Loveday and Russell Lane. Lane hammered 51 out of the first 66 runs before being bowled by skipper Andy McNeill. Matt Jones soon followed also bowled by McNeill at 74. This brought Geoff Isaacs to the wicket and with Loveday they put on 96 with good stroke play. Isaacs was then dismissed for 54 to leave Finches at 170 – 3.
But after the 200 was passed three more wickets fell leaving Finches six down. After Gary Loveday was caught for his well made 90 it needed Matt Harper and Tom Potter to play out for the draw. At 245 – 7 the match was drawn. A century and five half centuries ensured a run filled match with the honours to the visiting Cove who remain top of the table by 16 points.
