Blaggers leads from the front

With a narrow defeat and close drawn match behind them Finchampstead needed a return to winning ways as they hosted Beaconsfield in the fifth match of the league campaign.
Visitors Beaconsfield were asked to bat first in the fine conditions at the start. They commenced the innings brightly against the seam of Simon Hards and Sam Taylor. There were 38 on the board before Bronwell Williams was caught behind off Hards. Spinner Matt Harper replaced Taylor in the thirteenth over and with the score having reached 70 he had fellow opener Adam Francis also caught behind.
With 30 overs gone Beaconsfield were 116 – 2 needing accereration against the steady bowling of Harper and Russell Lane. As the runs then stepped up two more wickets were down by 130. Luc Walker was c aught and bowled Lane for 34 and Paul Sylvester trapped lbw also to Lane. The fifth was down at 174 as David Heaviside was bowled by Harper.
On 200 the third  wicket for Harper saw Phil Swindle neatly caught by Tom Ansell. Then a fine knock for skipper Chris Thomas ended at 58 with Harper having him caught by Lane. The innings closed as Denzil Owen was stumped at the end for the fifth wicket for Harper. Beaconsfield were 219 – 9 in their 52 overs allocation.  The fine 20 overs spell for Matt Harper gave a return of 5 – 70.
The start that Finchampstead needed arrived with free scoring from openers Russell Lane and Gary Loveday. The 100 was up in 15 overs then at 116 Lane was caught in the deep for a well struck 61. Geoff Isaacs joined Loveday but he also was caught in the outfield for 14. But the scoring continued at a good pace until at 191 in 35 overs Dan Lincoln was bowled by spinner Jack Cameron for 32.
Another outfield catch dismissed Andrew House at 213 but Finches were comfortably home by 6 wickets at 222 – 4 with 6 overs remaining. The sound win was held together by the magnificent 97 not out from Gary Loveday. Finches remain in fourth slot just 20 points from leaders Cove.
