23-07-2011 - Away - TVL - Amersham vs Finch

Four runs short

Finchampstead made the return visit to Amersham on Saturday keen to reverse the close loss earlier in the season.
Green conditions after damp weather encouraged skipper Gary  Loveday  to invite Amersham to bat first after winning the toss. Opening bowlers Simon Hards and James Robertson were thwarted by batsmen Rob Viney and Joe Shuttle before a change to seamer Russell Lane saw the first wicket down. He bowled Viney then at 49 in 20 overs Hards had Abe Mayer caught. The third and fourth were down at 63 with Hards continuing his lengthy spell.
After Hugh Jackson was bowled Hards at 105 bright strokes from  skipper Luke Jackson pushed the score along. Then with spinners Tom Potter and JJ Dewes replacing the seamers they secured the remaining wickets. Good batting from Jackson 39 and Andy Viney 26 ensured a total of 176 in 52 overs.
The fine 22 over spell from Hards saw a 3 – 51 return and Dewes claimed 3 wickets.
Given 48 overs the start could not have been worse for Finches. Inside 3 overs both Russell Lane and Geoff Isaacs were bowled by the opening attack. At 21 Andrew House was lbw to Jacko Nel.  Then sound batting from Gary Loveday and fluent strokes from Simon Bell saw a 69 run stand. It ended at 90 with Bell bowled for a fine 44 by Andy Viney. Viney then bowled Tom Ansell and when Loveday was caught behind of Nel Finches were 110 – 6. 20 runs further and two more were down so 130 – 8 and a tricky situation. But solid play from Kwame Appiah and Simon Hards saw 42 valuable runs and victory in sight. Then with 5 needed Appiah was well caught and bowled and on the same score Hards played on to Nel for his 31.
So Finches being all out for 172 lost the close match by 4 runs. Paceman Jacko Nel took 5 – 43 and there were 3 wickets for Andy Viney.
