14-05-2009 - Home - Bracknell & Dist Eve Cricket League - Finch vs Old Beans

Finch Flyers off to Flying Start

Stand-in skipper Simon Bell won the toss,  elected to bat in this 16 8 ball over game, and opened with Arron Todd who smote a couple of 6’s (33 off 14 balls) under a rain threatening sky.  Charlie Alexander (74 retired for a rest by his skipper) and Marcus Bazley (36) put on a hard running partnership.  Darron Augustus hit a 6 (36 off 17 balls cameo) joined Marcus.  Then Matt Morris scored rapidly (17 not out) and Adam Davey (2 not out off 1 ball) completed the 16 overs with Finch on 204 for 4.  Later revised in the post game bar discussion to 204 for 5 as 'retirement unhurt' is classed as ‘retired out’.

Old Beans (first formed some 15 years ago in Beano Square) skippered by the legendary former BBC cricket correspondence Andrew Elliot got off to a slow start but scored freely in the last overs to reach 175 for 5 with N Heaton top scoring 47 not out.

Simon masterfully skippered the side in the field to achieve a 29 run victory.  Bowling stats (whilst awaiting a fix in the web-site admin to record all players and stats):

Tony Smith 22 runs off 3 overs

Anish Koshal 19 runs off 2 overs

Matt Morris 26 for 1 off 3 overs

James Osler 19 runs off 2 overs

Simon Bell 21 for 1 off 2 overs

Adam Davey 30 for 1 off 3 overs

Ashley Hull 27 runs off 1 over

Arron Todd 10 for 2 off the last 2 balls off the last over and is on for a Hat trick next ball bowled!

Finch bowling accuracy so early in the season was a delight to observe with only 4 wide balls and 2 no balls and no byes with keeper Charlie a catch and a stumping.  Outstanding fielding stopped Old Beans from scoring boundaries or running 2's on a rather very large but beautifully prepared pitch and outfield.  The rain eventually arrived but thankfully well after stumps.  Max points puts Finch at the top of the league.

Topically due to an ‘accounting oversight’ an enquiry by an independent committee established that the match balls did not cost £34 each,  as previously announced by the incumbent team manager, and were in fact most reasonably priced.  The position on match fees will therefore be revised and possibly a BBQ at the next home game!
