Final league game ends in win for U9 Falcons
The outcome of the final group match for the Falcons would determine whether they had any chance of advancing to the knockout stages of the Berkshire Cup. Whether the boys knew this was unclear, but the generous start they gave our hosts, Wokingham, would not have settled their nerves. Through some strong batting (with those plastic bats!), slightly off-target bowling and below par fielding, Wokingham raced away to 233 without loss in the first five overs and a large total was looming over the horizon. However, the last ten overs saw a distinct improvement in bowling accuracy and general sharpness around the field which restricted Wokingham to 257 for two – a good score, but not out of reach for the Falcons. Pick of the bowlers was Sam L-D who ended up with figures of two overs, for three runs and both Wokingham wickets (including a wicket maiden). In addition, Sam Dunks took a tidy catch for the second Wokingham wicket, Thomas bowled a maiden, Callum gave away just the one run and importantly the last over was bowled accurately by Kieran with just two byes being scored.
The Falcons’ batting has generally been good all season, and a focused and determined start was required if the boys were to prevail. Any worries were quickly dispelled thanks to aggressive and confident batting down the card. After the first two pairs of batsmen the Falcons had raced away to 253 for the loss of two wickets. Lucas and Jack recorded 28 runs as a pair, while Sam L-D and Kieran reached 26. This seemed to set the stage for the following pairs to contribute to an overall mature batting performance. Thomas and Jamie scored 15 as pair (with Jamie recording his first two boundaries of the season), Callum and Alex scored 20, and Owen and Sam D reached 18. Top scorer was Lucas (22) who hit a hat-trick of boundaries, followed by Thomas (17, which included four boundaries) and Sam L-D (16, including 3 boundaries). A total of 296 for five was reached and the Falcons registered an easy win. It’s important to note that the Wokingham bowling was generally accurate, and combined with a slow outfield the Falcons did not have things all their own way. It was only through positive and forceful batting that the win was so comfortable, with one sweetly struck boundary from Owen standing out for this observer. The boys now await their fate to see if they will advance in the competition.
