U9 Falcons win at Slough to secure a semi-final place
Having secured a ‘Best Runner-up’ spot, the Falcons visited Slough for their quarter final of the Berkshire league on a sunny Sunday morning. After losing the toss the Falcons were put into bat and it soon became obvious that every run would have to be earned due to a damp, slow outfield and Slough being sharp and well drilled in their fielding. The usually steady pair of Sam L-D and Kieran decided to test the nerves of those watching by inviting a potential run out with just the second ball of the innings. This may have been due to them being caught out by the sluggish outfield, but after that they adjusted to the conditions and gave the Falcons a good start of twenty runs for the loss of one wicket in their three overs. Then followed three mature and secure partnerships in the face of some accurate and aggressive bowling. Jack/Jamie, Adam/Thomas and Ben/Matthew demonstrated great shot selection and intelligent running to keep the score ticking over, setting it up perfectly for the last pair of Alex and Sam D to hit out and record the highest partnership of the innings of 26 runs. There were many other highlights along the way: Sam L-D top scored with 18 (including three boundaries), Alex achieved his highest score of the season with a total of 15 which also included three fours, Sam D hit a powerful six, and Adam Telford – on his debut – hit a four from the first ball he faced. Particular mention must be made of Ben and Matthew, who showed great temperament and bravery facing what can only be described as the fastest under nine bowler seen all season. Refusing to be intimidated in anyway, they protected their wickets and ensured no runs were lost. They dug in and showed the fighting spirit that has been instilled within the entire squad, and at the end of the 15 overs the Falcons had reached 287 for 3.
The Slough boys still remained upbeat and confident, even facing a challenging total - so were the Falcons hopes of an all Finchampstead semi-final going to be dashed? The Slough batsmen were immediately put on the back foot by a superb opening over from Kieran who claimed two wickets. From this point on, wickets were picked up on a regular basis with a number of players sharing the spoils. Young Matthew once again defied his age by claiming one wicket for just two runs in his over, while Adam rounded off a great first appearance for the Falcons by securing his first wicket. In addition, Sam D grabbed a brace and Jack went one better with three. Overall there were some great figures recorded: Kieran – two overs, seven runs for two wickets; Sam D – two overs, three runs for two wickets; Jack – two overs, 11 runs for three; while Thomas bowled his two overs with precision, giving away just three runs and was unlucky not to claim a wicket. The bowling effort was backed-up by a solid fielding performance that kept Slough on the defensive and scrabbling for runs. In the end the Falcons completed an excellent performance by restricting Slough to just 228 for 9 and securing a 59 run victory.
