19-05-2008 - Home - BYCL - Finch vs Shinfield

U9 Eagles Win in Artic Weather

Well it was a bit like the 19th January rather than 19th May and definitely not summer as the cold Easterly wind had the spectators in winter coats and blankets with most drinking cups of hot tea.  There were some of the Finch dads who had something a little cooler and stronger to drink in order to sustain them throughout the game!

The Team: Dan C, Joe L, Luke A, Benjamin S, Thomas T, Nick W, Matthew E, Brandon M, William E, Lewis W

Shinfield U9 Innings – 216 for 8

Finch Eagles fielded first and were very eager, committed with very good fielding technique to restrict the Shinfield boys to a very manageable total.  It started in the first over with Nick W taking two wickets and continued through the rest of the innings. William made a great run out with a direct hit on the stumps from long range that looked almost impossible. There were very few runs coming off the bat from Shinfield and their first boundary came in the 9th over off the bowling of our youngest player in the side Benjamin S, who bowled a tidy over despite the boundary.  Lewis W, Dan C and Matthew E all had good performances with the ball. Shinfield saved their better batsmen for the last pairing.  However the return of Nick W for a second over with the ball managed to keep the scoring down.  Shinfield finished on 216-8.

Squash and biscuits were a little delayed due to a locked kitchen but finally it arrived and the boys dived in before the Finch innings got underway

Finch Eagles U9 Innings – 255 for 6

Finch started very confidently and brightly with the opening pair of Luke and William overhauling the total in the first three overs with some flashing shots a few runs and a couple of boundaries.  However they did lead a charmed life when at one point they were at the same end having a chat, but did not get run out.  Also they rode their luck as some good catching opportunities also went down. They ended their 3 overs with Finch at 220-1.

Our second pair of Matthew E and Benjamin S made the most runs, 25 runs without the loss of a wicket.  Matthew the senior partner scoring freely with the bat and Benjamin when he finally got some strike played some very technically correct shots along the ground for some 2’s and 1’s to support a great partnership that worked well ending up 245-1.
Dan C and Lewis batted next and whilst they lost a few wickets they made up for it by scoring some good runs with good running between the wickets ending their three overs on 240-4.

Nick and Brandon steadied the innings keeping out some good bowling and edging some runs without losing a wicket despite some close scares and the Shinfield wicket keeper going for a stumping every ball ending up on 253-4.

Our final pair of Thomas and Joe had a tough time against their better bowlers, however they were up for the battle and some cavalier stroke play with an exciting time between the wickets.  We lost 2 wickets in 3 balls early on and the alarm bells were ringing but then a steady set of runs and intelligent shots bought some boundaries and Finch Eagles ran out comfortable winners on 255-6
