U9 Eagles off to a winning Start in BYCL

Finchampstead U9 Eagles got off to a winning start in their first fixture in the BYCL league.Finch won the toss and decided to bat on a nice May evening, the sun was out and it looked a good batting track.Matthew and James opened the batting and gave the team a good steady start, only spoilt by a run out when Matthew sent James back on a sharp single.Brandon and Rowan came to the crease and the visitors cranked up the pace of their bowling and although some good defensive batting the visitors took a couple of wickets to take charge. With Finch on the back foot, William and Tommie came to the crease and showed great calling and running between the wickets to up the run rate.Thomas and Joe carried on the steady batting with some good play against some quality bowling and then Luke and Dan came in to again increase the run rate, Dan pulling a four to the leg side in the final over. Again however Finch appeared to undo some of the good work with a last ball run out going for a very very sharp single. The visitors bowling was generally of a good quality and kept Finch down to 244-5 which Gary the coach considered a par score on this wicket.

With a par score to protect, overall the bowling was excellent with all the boys contributing in their over(s).Special mention goes to Joe who took two wickets in two balls and Thomas who bowled a very steady line especially in the last over.In respect of the fielding this again was of high quality, Dan took a very good catch and Matthew, Tommie, James and Dan kept very tidily behind the stumps. Brandon also stopped a couple that seemed destined for the boundary rope. The bowling and general fielding performance helped win  the game by restricting the visitors to 229-6 for a victory by 15 runs.
Gary could not decide who was man of the match as he was delighted with the bowling and fielding (batting there was room for improvement, especially in the running between the wickets) so gave it to the whole team for a great start to the new season for the Eagles!
