HERALD CUP CHAMPIONS - AGAIN

u17's retain Herald Cup.

With Andrew House retiring on 51 in 29 balls, this was a game that Finch had won by over 10 of their innings but then, like Lewis Hamilton on Sunday's Formula One, they had to come out and win it again.

Finchampstead never looked prettier, lush green under a powder blue sky, the bar packed and supporters old and young eagerly awaiting the umpires to walk out.  It all started with a crucial wicket by Justin Clarke to remove Tilson, Aldershot 1st team batsman with a couple of 100's this season after Richard Madgwick and Tony Smith opened the bowling for Finch and keeping Aldershot from making a fast start.  After 6 overs with Aldershot on 28 skipper Matt Morris decided on a change of bowling bringing on Justin and himself. Immediately Matt took a good catch of Justin’s bowling and then took a wicket himself off his first over.  After 12 overs Aldershot were 74 for 2. Phil West and Adam Davey took over and both kept Aldershot pinned down and were rewarded with wicket each. A maiden by Phil ensured Aldershot stayed on 90 after 15 overs when Richard calmly effected a run out. Good glove work by Andrew with a stumping off Adam’s leg spin towards then end. The skipper’s field’s were effective and everyone was fielding very well.  An example was Tony’s effort, emulating Dave Bellis, running backwards and diving almost holding an almost impossible catch and Aldershot closed on 122 for 5. 

Andrew and Adam opened for Finch and put on a partnership of 70. With Andrew retiring, Richard arrived at the crease and promptly hit two wonderful boundaries straight back over the bowlers head.  Finch 80 off 10 overs. Aldershot’s hopes of winning were falling faster than a buy-to-let property on the Costa del Sol, but, as Phil Tufnel is fond of saying, ‘cricket is a funny old game’.  Adam 23 and then Matt fell to the slower bowlers.  Finch 98 off 14.  Richard and James Osler also quickly followed and Aldershot were back in it with Finch needing 22 off 4 overs. Tony and Justin made a stand but then Tony fell and Scotty Osler joined Justin. These two old campaigners ‘smote’ (I heard it on TV) some glorious boundaries and comfortably saw Finch home to a well deserved victory. Presentation, back slapping, photo’s and a scrumptious buffet concluded proceedings with the Cup safely back in the hutch. And now on to Friday to see if this u17 side can do the double and win the Berkshire Cup.
