13-05-2008 - Home - TCL - Finch vs Valley End

Winning Start for Squad u17

Squad U17 began their TCL league adventure at home on the beautifully prepared main square
under an aqua blue Mojave Desert sky against a superbly attired and very well organised
Valley End team. Big club Valley End. Matt Bell opened the bowling with pace and
precision was rewarded with an early wicket. However Valley dug in steadily scoring
runs without loosing a wicket until Matt Huggan spun his magic. At one point it looked
like Valley would amass a sizable score as some of our bowling and fielding was a
bit ‘early-doors-cobwebs’ but Tony Smith collected one with a neat stumping by
Charlie Alexander, considered captaincy from Matt Morris and ‘big arms’ from Alex Walton,
Tony Smith, James Osler, Phil West and David Bellis helped to keep Valley to 107 for 3.
Opener Darren Redwood 49 not out was restricted from getting his 50 by a good last over
by Ali Black. Better running by Valley would have added another 15 runs and there’s no
doubt Finch needed Adam Davey to answer a very late call to join the team.

Finch started their innings with a good run rate with no-risk batting but kept loosing
wickets until the partnership of Matt Huggan 28 and skipper Matt Morris 27. Both ran
well and scored some super boundaries which put Finch back on track. James Osler 17
not out played a master-class mature innings well supported by Phil West to ensure
Finch crossed the line scoring 111 for 6 with balls to spare in the penultimate over
as the sun kissed the horizon as, like the desert, it got very chilly. Valley U17
are a credit to their club and will do well this season and have a really smart ‘strip’.
Squad U17 can and will improve in all areas of their game and that includes supporters
turning out. But not a bad start.
Best wishes to umpire Simon Bellis who is recovering from a knee replacement op
