25-07-2008 - Away - BYCL - Reading vs Finch
U17’s loose final but win friends with their gallant effort
On the hottest day of the summer, Matt Morris won the toss and chose to field. Tony Smith trapped Bevan early on and then took Maycock’s wicket in his second over. Meanwhile Richard Madgwick was bowling at his best, frequently beating the bat and was very unlucky not to take a wicket. Reading 22 for 2 after 6 overs when Matt Morris and Adam Davey came on and did well with Reading on 47 after 10 overs. Considering the number of county batsmen Reading were fielding this was very good. Justin Clarke replaced Matt and Justin’s first over was a wicket maiden with Andrew running back to a skier. Then Matt and Tony came back but Reading were scoreing freely in last three overs. Running at deep mid-off Matt held on to a high one, athletically keeping from falling over the rope off Tony’s last ball, however Reading had climbed to 126 for 3.
Finch openers started aggressively and it must be said fortuitously with Reading not holding their catches, putting on an opening partnership of 34 before Adam fell to a snorter in the 6th over. But then a collapse of wickets kept Andrew off strike as Richard then Matt quickly fell. Finch were on 56 for 3, in the game but desparately needing a partnership. For too brief a moment James Osler 14 looked in form but went followed by Justin. Andrew 48 at last fell with Finch on 87 in the 16th over. Another great innings by Andrew. Tony never really got going but Scotty Osler was showing some resistance and was briefly joined by Phil West and finally Ali Black. Scotty and Ali kept attacking but as time ran out and Finch closed on 114 for 8 with Scotty on 18 not out. The lads were a credit to Finch with their fielding, determination and good sportsmanship. Slough were perfect hosts and provided a super buffet for the boys.
Upon reflection, it increasing felt to this reporter that with the late scheduling of the finals this year, recent injuries, school trips and even a player stranded abroad by a missed flight, that squad u17 were playing out a Greek tragedy to show that we are all puppets to the whim of the Gods. Leaving the ground the radio played Bob Dylan’s famous song, it's all over now, baby blue. Yea but, two finals and one cup is not a bad return this season.
