08-07-2008 - Home - Herald Cup - Finch vs Guildford
In a thrilling Herald Cup semi final, squad u17 won by 6 runs against Guildford. With Guildford previously and easily winning the league match on their ground, u17 were facing a stern test. Having won the toss, skipper Mat Morris decided to bat. Openers Charlie and Adam 24 got off to a good start against a very good bowling attack and put on an 82 run undefeated partnership with Charlie retiring on 50 in the 10th over. Wickets then tumbled with Matt Bell, Matt Huggan and Alex Jones putting up the best resistance. However it was a case of some rather foolish run-outs, an area that needs to be addressed, especially as all the batsman run-out were playing good scoring shots. Sadly Finch were bowled out for 136 with 5 balls to go in the 20th over, possibly 10 runs short and now needing to bowl and field out of their skins. The pace of opening pair Richard Madgwick (a welcome return to Finch) and Matt Bell kept Guildford honest although were unable to take wickets. Matt Morris and Matt Huggan took over and the skipper promptly started hitting the stumps and snapped up 3 valuable wickets. This bowling partnership also restricted Guildford from batting freely and was crucial. Alex Walton come on to bowl up the hill with Phil West, Richard Madgwick and Matt Bell at the other end. Alex bowled at his best this season and was rewarded with a wicket but more importantly these partnerships helped continue to stifle Guildford and they come up short by 6 runs in what had become dark chilly conditions. Rather apt as revenge is a dish best served cold and cup holders Finch go thru to the final. This was about two giants of the league, fighting hard, playing in good spirit, upholding the traditions of the game or to use a Tim Henmanism, this game was outstandingly outstanding.
