01-07-2008 - Away - TCL - Farnham vs Finch

Finches Flourish at Farnham

It was a sultry hot summer evening when Finch won the toss and chose to bat.  Farnham is a complex ground with a true pitch, all be it with a transverse slope,  long boundaries at the end of steep declines and a couple of short boundaries.  Knowing Farnham could put on a big score, openers Charlie Alexander 43 and Adam Davey 35 attacked the bowlers and the Finches were on 72 before loosing their first wicket in the 8th over.  An unforunate run out for Charlie enabled Marcus Bazley to join Adam and continue with a healthy run rate and was also unfortunately run out.  Matt Morris then remained at the creese 26 not out with some fine cameo's from David Bells, Matt Bell (also run out) and James Osler with Tony Smith completing the innings at 158 for 7 with two excellent sixes from Charlie and James.  Farham felt they could surpass this score but Tony Smith had other ideas and knocked over the stumps with his first ball.  Matt Bell felt the same at the other end and also hit the stumps.  Farnham made a recovery but lost wickets to Matt Huggan (2) and skipper Matt Morris. Marcus bowling spin helped surpress the run chase and although did not take wickets contributed with only 8 runs off 3 overs.  David Bellis held a fine catch coming off the short boundary.  Finches fielding including a fine stop by Alex Gillet at long on and some big arms from James and Alex, ensured Farnham were behind the run chase.  But, it aint over till its over and their no 8, R Goldsworthy, hit 4 big 6's at the end to make it interesting. The fat lady started singing as Farham closed on 135 for 9.  Finches u17's batting, bowling, fielding and, in view of the challenge of Farnham's ground's variencies, the fielding placements were top banana in this 20Twenty TCL format.
