27-05-2010 - Away - BYCL - Theale & Tilehurst vs Finch
On a fine evening the U15 's travelled to Theale and Tilehurst for out 3rd league match.
Finchampstead won the toss and elected to field and from the start you could sense our that some players had forgotten what they were suppose to be doing. A dropped catch and some miss fielding allowed Theale/Tilehurst to build an innings and by the 12th over of their innings they had only lost 2 wickets and a total of 50 runs. Which onthe face of the Finch performance was not bad.
However one of the undismissed openers (Cooke) and number 4 batsman ( Holder) then stepped up the runs and Finchampstead, bowling, fielding all fell apart and in the last 8 overs Theale and Tilehurst scored 80 runs. They ended their innings on 120 for 3 .
The old opening partnership of Beswick and Walton started Finchampsteads innings. The loss of waltons wicket brought Scott Rixon to the crease and with some luck pulled the inings together with help from other players to get to the 17th over requiring 28 runs, Scott tried for a 6 got caught just in sidethe boundary and with Tom Wroot and Liam coldwell trying to get over the finish line they lost their wickets. Finchampstead now need 18 runs of the last over.
Tom Bale hit the first ball for 4 and also the 2nd for 4. Finch now needed 10 runs of the last 4 balls. Tom hit the ball hard and ran 1, went back for the 2nd and was run out and inch from the line. Dismayed and covered in dust he tried but in the end Finchampstead were 9 runs short. Rory Hannigan in only his first game saw how much these games mean to players and despite and injured arm, also gave it his best.
In truth Finchampstead gave Theale and Tilehurst 30 runs more through poor bowling and fielding and lack of concentrating when batting and hopefully will have learnt a valuable lesson. "Every Ball in Cricket counts".
