Falcons show ruthless side in easy victory

The first match for Finchampstead Falcons U11s took place on a typical British spring Sunday morning – rainy, windy and overcast! However, the elements did not stop the Falcons showing great form and opening the season with a 10-wicket victory. The visitors, Littlewick Green, batted first but were soon on the back foot after the opening over from Sam Lawton-Davies who claimed two wickets in two balls, with just one bye being posted on the scoreboard (and final figures of 2 overs, 2 runs, for 2 wickets). This excellent start was continued with accurate bowling from Joe Loveday and James Millard, with James recording the only maiden over of the match. Finding themselves with only 37 runs after 10 overs for the loss of two wickets, the visitors had to dig-in deep and re-launch their innings. In fact, after the early breakthrough, the Falcons found additional wickets hard to come-by with the overcast elements and the cold (fingers) perhaps contributing to a number of dropped chances and some disappointing fielding. To give credit to Littlewick Green, they fashioned a third wicket stand of 87, even though Sam Dunks and Connell Trainor gave away only five runs each for their two overs. In the end, the only other success for the Falcons was a stumping by Tommie Predgen, showing lightning-quick reactions to remove the visitors’ danger-man off the bowling of Will Edwards in the very last over.

Chasing 91, would the Falcons rue their missed opportunities and generosity - having provided 52 runs to the Littlewick Green total through extras. Confident and aggressive batting from openers Sam Dunks and Tommie Predgen soon ensured the Falcons were well on their way. The Falcons opening pair raced away to an partnership of 53 after only 37 balls, with Tommie retiring at this point on 29 (from 20 balls) after hitting the second 6 of his innings. Soon after, Sam also retired on 25 (from 26 balls and including 5 fours). In the end, the visitors’ bowling had no answer to the Falcons’ batting as Will Edwards (18 not out) and captain for the day Thomas Tinsley steered the Falcons home to victory in 12.1 overs. A great start to the season but the boys know there will be harder matches to come.
