08-07-2010 - Home - BYCL - Finch vs Henley
Following the great win against Wokingham, the question on everyone’s lips was, “Could the Falcons reach the same level of performance once more?” The answer was a resounding ”yes" , with the boys showing a ruthless efficiency , not seen before during the season, to beat a potential BYCL quarter-finalist with ease. With Henley winning the toss and electing to bat, the Falcons soon realised that they would have to work hard as the visitors calmly and assuredly reached 23 for no loss after five overs. In the next over, James Millard made the breakthrough needed with Will Edwards taking a fine catch - and from this point on the Falcons took full control of the match. Accurate bowling restricted Henley’s run rate to less than four an over as they reached 34 for two after 10. Henley then lost a third wicket in the twelfth, with their key county batsman playing-onto his stumps from the bowling of James Woodford, and from that moment on each incoming batsman was soon sent back to the pavilion after only a short visit to the crease. The list of fine bowling performances must be recognised: James Millard – five runs for 1; James Woodford – seven runs for 2, plus one run out thanks to Joe Loveday; James Bewick – five runs for 2 (including a caught and bowled); Will Edwards – seven runs for 1; Joe Loveday – two runs for 1; Thomas Tinsley – two runs for 2. Add to this the generally excellent fielding and Tommie Predgen on top of his game behind the wickets (claiming two stumpings and a caught-behind), the Falcons had restricted Henley to just 69 all out, after 19.4 overs.
This confident and assured display was now taken on with the bat. In fact, the match was over as a contest very quickly as the Falcons reached 62 without loss after five overs. The Henley opening bowlers had no answer to the blistering opening pair of Lucas Bamber and Owen Powell (12). Lucas was in particularly impressive form taking only 13 balls to retire on 25, which included six boundaries. While there was a small blip, with the visitors ensuring they did not go away empty handed by claiming two quick wickets, the Falcons reached their target in less than eight overs with Will Edwards also reaching 18 (NO). A truly professional and efficient performance, which had the Henley manager stating he was a bit shell -shocked, and now sets the Falcons up for a winner-takes-all match against Hurst to see who will reach the quarter finals.
