10-06-2010 - Away - BYCL - Binfield vs Finch
After working so hard to establish a winning position, the Falcons experienced heartbreak after losing a thrilling contest on the penultimate ball of the match. Winning the toss and electing to bat first the Falcons made steady progress reaching 49 for 2 after ten overs and with Thomas Tinsley making a significant contribution scoring 22. With Kieran Brown providing a steadying influence for his team mates the total was pushed on 72 for the loss of one more wicket after 15 overs, and everything was looking good for a final push to a score over 100. However, the Falcons put themselves under pressure through the loss of two wickets in two balls – through Kieran being caught on 22 and an avoidable run out. The Falcons managed to steady themselves with Sam Lawton-Davies and Will Edwards guiding the Falcons to a final total of 111 for 6 over the final three overs.
The possibility of a second victory in a row for the Falcons improved with their opening spell of bowling. While only a single wicket fell, thanks again to the excellent reaction of wicket-keeper Tommie Predgen from the bowling of Kieran Brown, Binfield found themselves under immense pressure by only scoring 37 runs after 10 overs. The fact that from this total only 8 runs were extras demonstrated the accuracy of the Falcon’s attack. Surely victory was possible? But, over the next ten overs, the tables were slowly and painfully turned on the Falcons. Binfield began scoring more freely and the rate of extras from the Falcons increased. Even with Binfield still needing 47 runs from the final five overs, the Falcons seemed unable to respond to Binfield’s growing confidence especially with two of their batsmen retiring on 25. The game was finely balanced in the last two overs and when a run out of one of Binfield’s other star batsmen (on 19) was achieved it still looked like the Falcons had done enough to win. But it was not to be. The hosts showed what great strength they had in their batting and with the penultimate ball of the match secured victory. At the end the reactions of the two teams summed up the result, with Binfield showing unexpected joy in victory and the Falcons exhibiting confused silence, wondering how they had lost a match that was theirs for the taking.
