16-08-2008 - Home - HCP - Finch vs Farnham Royal

Royal Run Shortage

Unlike the first game againgst Farnham Royal Finches were unable to turn a below par score into a match winning one as the Royals exactted revenge for their one wicket loss earlier in the season.

Visiting Finchampstead on Saturday were league leaders Farnham Royal with the second placed hosts keen to make ground in the remaining four matches.

Both sides although not at full strength looked well balanced for a good contest. Finches were asked to bat first in good conditions after mixed weather during the week. Openers Russell Lane and Sam Cheetham set the innings along with a fine 86 run stand before Lane was first to go after a hard hit 51. After Cheetham departed for 40 a solid 34 from Matt Jones saw the 150 up with three wickets down. But the left arm spin of Naveed Zaigham was in operation and he took toll of the middle order as Finches lost four more wickets for 16 to leave them at 173 for 7. Assisted by the quality seam of Krishmar Santokie Finches were all out for 194 with nine wickets between these bowlers.

The bowling was opened by Anthony Parson and Sam Taylor and between them saw the visitors 58 with three down. But a good half century from Naved Khan saw the score to 147 for Farnham Royal before he was the fifth wicket to go. He was caught at deep square leg off spinner Nick James who had earlier joined the attack. James bowled well but the visitors were home for the win at 198 for 7  for the three wicket success. James returned 3 for 41 and Taylor 2 for 27.

So a narrow but deserved win for Farnham Royal who increase their lead by two more points with Finches in third slot after the resounding win for Wokingham.
