26-07-2008 - Away - HCP - Buckingham Town vs Finch
Not for the first time this season Finchampstead failed to bat well against Buckingham and presented them with another 25 points albeit this time they were made to work for it. Having posted 140 at Finch in the first game the visitors again made hard work of it as they were, at one stage, 92-7.
Finchampstead arrived in glorious conditions after the long journey to Buckingham Town in their first ever visit for the return match in the premier league campaign.
Captain Taylor employed his usual pre match ritual of warm up followed by losing the toss. Taylor has yet to win a toss this season and looks set to be replaced in the tossing stakes by vice captain Bloyce (a much luckier and more experienced tosser). Finches were invited to bat first by Buckingham. The going was tough early on as both openers fell LBW to Dwane Bowden with just 8 runs on the board. More trouble followed with Matt Jones caught and bowled by the same bowler with only 10 more added. The damage was eased by a good 65 run stand from Taylor (14) and a fine 50 from Scott Patterson. Australian Patterson had batted vey well but it was his tired dismisal that triggered a mini collapse when two more wickets then fell at 92 leaving the innings in disarray. At 119 the eighth fell but the side was indebted to sensible and patient batting from the lower order. They lifted the score to 186 all out in 60 overs. Harper led the way with his 43 not out. Great support from Nick James and Nick Hillman boosted the overall total and gave Finch a target of some sorts to bowl at.
Steve Bloyce and Darron Augustus opened the attack each securing a wicket in removing free scoring openers Rob Large and Lee Tomlinson with 25 on the board. With bowling variations including the spinners four wickets were down at 109. Then a possible turning point in the game arrived with a direct throw from Scott Patterson to run out John Cater for 43. Finches then pegged away but the score was 178 before the eighth wicket was down. Despite accurate late bowling two boundaries from Ben Stafford saw Buckingham home for a narrow win with 8 balls remaining. A good and close match and despite the loss 10 points and fourth place in the table for Finchampstead.
