28-06-2008 - Home - HCP - Finch vs Thatcham Town

Finch play second fiddle to One Man Band

Finchampstead welcomed fellow Berkshire side Thatcham Town for their first ever premier league match on Saturday.

Good conditions prevailed as skipper Taylor took part in the usual ritual of losing the toss and Finches were asked to bat. Openers Russell Lane and Sam Cheetham proceeded well until with 50 on the board Lane departed for a hard hit 39. Finches found free scoring tricky against the pace of Ali Naqvi and the steady left arm spin of Duncan Johnson. Even with solid innings from Simon Bell 46 and Scott Patterson 28 the fifth wicket was down at 144 in 42 overs. Acceleration that was needed in the last 18 overs was gathered slowly as only 21 runs were gained in the next 10 overs. Some useful late strokes from Steve Bloyce and Anthony Parson saw the score to 208 for 8 in the 60 allotted overs, this well short of the expected achievement. Naqvi produced a marathon effort with 5 for 74 and Johnson 3 for 56 led the way in good bowling performances for Thatcham Town. It was clear that the Thatcham bowling depended very heavily on Naqvi and it was also to prove, later on in the day, that the batting was no different.

Using their three seamers Finchampstead plugged away and reduced the visitors to 92 for the loss of 4 wickets at the 25 overs mark. But with the match well poised Ali Naqvi showed his all round class in settling in and controlling the match. Three more wickets fell by 168 with then 8 overs remaining. But Thatcham Town were home for the win at 211 for 7 with Naqvi a well played 74 not out. Credit must go to Thatcham however, on this evidence, even they may conceed that they rely too heavily on one player. Finches slip a place to fourth whilst Thatcham Town slot into sixth position in the table.
