Rain stops game but not celebrations

As with many clubs, the poor weather certainly had its say on the last Saturday of the premier league season with disruption everywhere.

Third place in division two west, Finchampstead hosted Thames Town in the return fixture.  The torrential rain on Friday jeopardised the match but the fine work by groundsman Paul Maynard and good veering ensured a start promptly oat 11am.  Winning the toss, Finches asked Thames Town to take first strike in the cloudy but dry starting conditions.  Bowlers Darron Augustus and Anthony Parson used the conditions well against openers Michael Beard and Manoj Parmar but after just four overs the rain arrived and caused a lengthy stoppage.  Play resumed with nearly an hour lost and 16 overs reduced from the total available.  But after only 8 more overs bowled the next phase of rain arrived and proceedings were halted for the day.  The visitors were 23 without loss and the abandonment resulted in 6 points for each side.

A shame that the last league day was spoilt by the weather for so many club.  For Finchampstead they retain third place in the table with a sound season for the mainly young side.  They won seven games losing five and cemented a solid performance which could well ensure progress next season.

The side was boosted by the arrival of Bucks County operner Russell Lane and Australian Scott Patterson.  Opening the innings Sam Cheetham revealed his promise and also bowled useful legspin when called upon.  Left hander Matt Jones was invariably reliable and had several important innings.

Finches were fortunate in the pace attack led by Steve Bloyce, Darron Augustus and Anthony Parson.  They all bowled well and placed the side in good positions to gain valuable points.  Skipper Sam Taylor handled the side very well in his first season as well as all round capability with bat  and ball.  Former colt Nick Hillman returned to the club and his outstanding wicket keeping was a boost for the side.
