Memory Lane

A bright day and a belter of a wicket greeted Burnham CC to the Memorial Ground in Finchampstead. Sam Taylor lost the toss and Burnham choose to exploit the hard, flat wicket by batting first. If the wicket was give any help to the bowlers during the day then it was surely to be in the first hour or so.

Bloyce and debutant Hards opened the attack with Parson absent from the line up due to unforseen girlfriend commitments. Simon 'Niggles' Hards (3-43) claimed his first league wicket with just 5 on the board aided by a great grab at third slip from Matt Jones. Celebrations nearly led to a season ending injury as Niggles attempted a 'high five' without due consideration to his fragile and injury prone frame. A stand of 100 between Fazal and Khan put the visitors back on top but Khan fell victim to Darron Augustus and Steve Bloyce (4-47) took two wickets in three balls including the dangerous Fazal for 72. The game had changed at 109-4 but the middle order railed and, aided by some uncharacteristic drops from the finches, they moved on to 219-9 after thier alloted 60 overs.

The total looked short of a match winning total in the fine batting conditions. This proved to be the case as the burley Bucks opener Russell Lane and Aussie hearthrob and newly pierced Patterson scored fluently. They had 103 on the board when Patterson (34) misjudged  a second run and was narrowly run out. This brought Matt Jones to the crease to combine with the hard-hitting Lane. The welsh wizzard put on a fine, mature display for his 54 not out but the day belonged to the loveable although slight sperical R.P. Lane.  The score was reached in 41 overs at 223 for 1 with Lane a magnificent 126 not out and a fourth slot in the table.
