31-05-2008 - Away - HCP - Basingstoke vs Finch

Basingstoke Boomed

Finches bounced back from a poor performance last week to record their second 25 point haul of the season with a fine win against a decent outfit at Basingstoke & North Hants CC.

In bowler friendly conditions skipper Taylor lost the toss and Basingstoke captain Stokes inserted the warblers on a green and slow deck. Kumaran Thirunavukkarasu made inroads almost immediately as he bowled Aussie opener Patterson. The Indian opening bowler ended up with 3-17 from 14 overs, in addition to that his name is a massive score in scrabble - so it was agood day for him. Handling the conditions well the burley Bucks Opener Lane and  young gun Matt Jones started to rebuild the Finch innings. Jones (33) departed which signalled a mini collapse before lunch as Cheetham and Blocyce soon followed but it was the impressive if not slightly rotund Karaoke signing Bucks beauty Russell Lane who, once again, shows his class as he struck 79. Skipper Taylor (34*) battled hard and found some form with Darron Augustus (21) his batting buddy for a partnership that saw the Finches get to a decent score of 203 in their 60 overs. BNCC skipper Stokes bowled tightly and unchanged but his marathon spell yielded just two wickets in 30 overs. Taylor would have preffered another 30 runs but this was still a total to bowl at.

The young Finch side needed an early strike and they got that through Anthony Parson who removed the dangerous Latouf with a pearler that swung late and found the edge to Harper at 1st slip. Harper then spilled a chance to remove the BNCC skipper Stokes again off the bowling of Parson. Fortuately, Stokes went soon after as Scotty Patterson took a sharp grab in the covers off the bowling of the impressive Steve 'Boom Boom' Bloyce to leave BNCC 47-2. Next in came Ex-Finch skipper Lee Nurse and he and opener Droy (61) took the score to 95 before pup Sam Cheetham removed Nurse with a fine bouncing legbreak. Unshaven and chav-like Cheetham returned figures of 1-29 in his 9 overs. His useful wickets and decent start to the season with the willow would, later that evening, yield him the player of the month for May. At 100-3 the game looked well balanced but it swung in the way of the warblers as the chubby veteran Harper sent down his liquorish allsorts to bowl Foxley and combine with Taylor to remove opener Droy. At 105-5 Finch could smell blood but Tea came at a bad time and BNCC regrouped as Scotty Dyer hit 27 to help add another 48 in no time after the interval. In a game that ebbed and flowed BNCC now looked a better bet. That was until Bloyce removed Dyer, James and the scrabble king Thiranavukkarasu. BNCC had bowled their overs very quickly and Finch had done the same leading to a very refreshing situation where, with no hint of a slow over rate fine, both sides were in with a chance of winning a tight game. Resistance came form Rouse (42) but it was Bloyce and his combination with some outstanding keeping from the tightess keeper in the league Hillman that won through. Another great team effort with some outstanding contributions from Lane, Hillman and the 5 wicket haul form Stephen' Two Booms' Bloyce.
